The 2021 Currituck County 4-H Poultry project has come to an end and boy was it a great finish! The 2021 Poultry Show was held Saturday, October 2, 2021 in conjunction with the Currituck County Farm Festival hosted N.C Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center. Youth  received two chicks in the Spring and participated in an educational program to  learn about poultry  and care and showmanship of chickens. Both the chicken and the youth were judged during the show. Youth  were judged on knowledge they gained about poultry during this project and also on how well they handled their birds in the showmanship. The chickens were judged  on body structure and development.

Showmanship highlights the knowledge and handling skills of the youth so they compete in age groups. Our Cloverbuds (ages 5-7 years old), Emmett White and Laurel Peele did a fabulous job and all received a blue ribbon. The Junior class is for youth  ages  8 – 10 years old. Our top Junior showmen were 1st place Jenna Peele, 2nd place Caleb Minton and 3rd place Karleigh Meads. The Senior class is youth ages 14 – 18 years of age and our 1st place Senior showman was Sailor Peele.

The “Official Judging” is when the chicken is judged so everyone is in the same class. The judge stated that this was a difficult class to judge because all the birds were about the same age and had all been cared for and well groomed for the show. He placed the class with 4th place going to Caleb Minton, 3rd place going to Karleigh Meads, 2nd place going to Sailor Peele and our 1st place and Grand Champion bird went to Jenna Peele. Congratulations to all of our 2021 participants!
