On December 2, 2020, a new 10-year lease agreement was fully executed between NC State University and the Blue Ridge Horseman’s Association (BRHA) for the Anita-Alta 4-H Camp in Lenoir in Caldwell County. The lease agreement begins on August 1, 2021, and terminates on July 31, 2031. The current 3-year lease agreement with the BRHA for Anita-Alta 4-H Camp expires on July 31, 2021.

Under the terms of the lease agreement, the Premises will be used solely for camping and recreational purposes by the BRHA and other groups that have traditionally used the camp as approved by the BRHA and NC State. Some of the BRHA’s obligations under the lease agreement include:

  • Maintain and manage the Premises grounds and buildings.
  • Mow as needed and as appropriate for use of the Premises.
  • Maintain all trails for aesthetics and to protect against erosion.
  • Pay all utilities associated with operation of the Premises.
  • Make the Premises available to other community groups that have traditionally used Anita-Alta 4-H Outpost Camp.

The 375-acre camp property borders Pisgah National Forest and provides access to miles of hiking, horseback riding, and mountain bike trails through the forest. The property features several camping spots for both tent camping and electric hookup. BRHA members pay an annual fee which helps support the camp facilities. A small $3 daily parking fee also helps support trail maintenance and development costs.

In addition to managing a conservation easement along the Brown Branch stream through the camp property, the BRHA has managed erosion challenges along the main camp road through the property, including replacement of two major culverts and plans to replace a third main culvert soon. They have also worked closely with the NC Forest Service on a joint prescribed burning services project and with the US Forest Service on a joint MOU for a public trail easement under the USFS’s new designated trail system.

“The Blue Ridge Horseman’s Association have been great stewards of our Anita-Alta 4-H Outpost Camp,” says Dave Herpy, NC 4-H Camping Specialist. “We are grateful for our partnership with the Blue Ridge Horseman’s Association.”
